How to Read Forex Charts: A Practical Guide to Price Action and Trade Decisions

Most retail traders can name a candlestick pattern. Far fewer can sit in front of a GBP/USD chart during the London open and make a coherent decision about whether to take a trade. This guide bridges that gap. It assumes you know what a candle looks like. It focuses on what to do with it.

What a Forex Chart Actually Shows

A forex chart plots exchange rate on the Y-axis against time on the X-axis. Every point or bar on that chart is the market’s answer to one question: what was this currency pair worth at this moment? Technical analysis works on the premise that price already reflects available information, and that repetitive human behaviour creates recognisable patterns worth trading. That premise is debatable in academic circles and extremely useful in practice.

Chart Types and Candlestick Anatomy

Line charts connect closing prices. Clean, but they discard most of the session’s information. Bar charts (also called HLOC charts) show the open, high, low, and close as a vertical bar with small horizontal ticks. Japanese candlestick charts show the same four data points but encode them visually: the body spans open to close, and the wicks extend to the high and low. A green or white body means price closed above the open. A red or black body means it closed below.

The wick matters. A long lower wick on a green candle means sellers pushed price down hard during the session, but buyers recovered it before the close. That is buyer pressure made visible. A candle with almost no body and equal wicks is a doji: neither side won. Every candle is a compressed story about a battle between buyers and sellers.

A pip is the fourth decimal place on most pairs (0.0001). On JPY pairs it is the second decimal place (0.01). If GBP/USD moves from 1.2700 to 1.2715, that is a 15-pip move.

Candlestick Patterns That Signal Buyer and Seller Pressure

Doji: Open and close are nearly identical, producing a cross shape. Neither buyers nor sellers dominated. At a key level after a sustained move, this signals exhaustion and potential reversal. Alone, it is a question mark. Combined with context, it is useful.

Hammer: Small body at the top of the candle, long lower wick, virtually no upper wick. Sellers drove price sharply lower during the session, then buyers overwhelmed them and reclaimed almost all of the ground. The long wick is the evidence. At a support level, this is one of the cleaner buy signals in price action trading.

Shooting Star: The mirror image. Small body at the bottom, long upper wick. Buyers pushed aggressively higher, sellers rejected every pip of that gain and drove price back. At resistance, this is a warning to longs and a potential short signal.

Engulfing candle: A candle whose body completely covers the previous candle’s body. A bullish engulfing at support means buyers absorbed all selling and then added more. A bearish engulfing at resistance means sellers took control decisively. The larger the engulfing candle relative to the prior one, the stronger the signal.

Timeframe, Session Behaviour, and Drawing Key Levels

Scalpers work on the one-minute to five-minute chart, holding trades for minutes. Day traders tend to use the fifteen-minute or one-hour chart, closing positions within the session. Swing traders work on the four-hour or daily chart and hold for days. The higher the timeframe, the fewer the false signals and the wider the stop-loss required. Match your timeframe to your available screen time, not to your desired profit target.

Session behaviour is one of the most underused edges in retail chart reading. The London open (08:00 UK time) frequently produces a sharp directional move as institutional liquidity enters. Many pairs that drifted sideways overnight suddenly establish a trend or fake out a prior level before reversing. The London/New York overlap (13:00 to 17:00 UK time) is the highest-volume window of the day. Volatility expands. Breakouts that occur during this overlap are statistically more likely to follow through than identical-looking breakouts at 21:00. Learn to recognise the difference between a 3am candle and a 14:00 candle. They are not the same thing.

Support is a price level where buyers have repeatedly stepped in. Resistance is where sellers have. Mark them with horizontal lines at obvious swing highs and swing lows. Trend lines connect a series of higher lows in an uptrend or lower highs in a downtrend. Fibonacci retracement draws potential pullback levels between a swing high and swing low, with the 61.8% level attracting particular attention from institutional traders.

Confluence and a Worked GBP/USD Setup Walkthrough

No single signal is reliable enough to trade alone. Confluence means stacking multiple independent signals that point to the same conclusion. Here is a practical framework: identify a key level on the daily chart, wait for a confirming candlestick pattern on the one-hour chart, and require at least one indicator to agree.

A worked example. GBP/USD is approaching 1.2650, a level that has acted as resistance twice in the past month. On the one-hour chart, a bearish engulfing candle forms at exactly that level. The 50-period moving average sits just above at 1.2670, adding resistance. RSI is reading 68, approaching overbought territory. Three independent signals align: structure, price action, and momentum. That is confluence.

Entry: short at the close of the engulfing candle, say 1.2648. Stop: above the candle’s high and the moving average, at 1.2675. Stop distance: 1.2675 minus 1.2648 equals 27 pips. Take-profit: two times the risk, so 54 pips below entry at 1.2594.

Position size calculation: if your account is in GBP and you risk 1% of a £5,000 account, that is £50. At a GBP/USD rate of 1.2648, a mini lot (10,000 units) carries a pip value of 0.0001 multiplied by 10,000 equals $1.00 per pip, which converts to approximately £0.79 per pip. Risk in pips is 27. So pip value needed equals £50 divided by 27 equals approximately £1.85 per pip. Divide by £0.79 to get roughly 2.3 mini lots, round down to 2 mini lots to stay within risk.

One practical note on BID versus ASK charting: most platforms chart the BID price. Your buy stop-losses trigger on the ASK, which is typically 1 to 3 pips above. Set stop-losses with the spread in mind or you will be stopped out correctly by the math and incorrectly by the mechanics.

Building a Chart-Reading Routine That Actually Works

Read the daily chart before every session. Mark the levels. Drop to the one-hour chart when price approaches one. Wait for a pattern. Check your indicators. If confluence exists and the session timing is right, execute and record the trade. Consistency beats cleverness every time.
